RECAP: Escape to New York Makes Grand Debut

The inaugural was cut short when the third planned day of music and arts was , but the first two days brought high profile acts such as , and and other attractions, like a mobile giant toad with a DJ booth in it and a that took over the grounds Saturday afternoon.

The festival, held at the in Southampton, included interactive art installations that festival-goers could lay down, dance or meditate in, such as Braindrop by sculptor Kate Raudenbush, the rose petal pool and the panda pit, a pen made of reclaimed wood and filled with stuffed pandas a toy factory rejected.

In addition to the main stage and acoustic stage, there were two DJ tents and a boxing ring for dance-offs. Offsite, there was camping at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton and glamping — glamorous camping — at the fairgrounds.

Guerilla Science, a U.K. group that mixes science with art and music, put on lectures and demonstrations, such as "Sideshow Science" with Adam Rinn of the Coney Island Side Show school, who explained the physics and physical training behinds feats such as sword swallowing.

The Static Jacks, gave the festival its start Friday. Attendance was initially low, but as the day went on and Lissy Trullie, Chairlift and Best Coast took the stage, the guests poured in. By the time went on, the grounds were packed.

English alt-rock band started off day two with a high-energy performance that drew the bulk of festival-goers from the other attractions to the main stage. Singer/songwriter Jamie Scott told the crowd that Graffitti6, a duo that consists of him and U.K. producer TommyD, first came to America in October, when one of his songs was used on an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.” He credited that with bringing Graffiti6 to Escape to New York as well.

The Submarines, , and would later grace the stage, before and brought the night to a close.

With the gates never opening Sunday, fans missed Savoir Adore, Tiger Love, Hank & Cupcakes, Reptar, Mates of State, The Jolly Boys and Of Montreal, but The Jolly Boys were slated to make a performance Sunday night at the Elks fairgrounds for those at the glamping site and others with Sunday tickets.

Organizers said they look forward to returning to the Shinnecock Reservation for another go next year.
