PHOTOS: Newtown Memorial Goes Up in Bridgehampton

Twenty six wreaths serve as a memorial for the victims of last week's shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Twenty six wreaths were placed around Founders' Monument in Bridgehampton Thursday evening, one for each victim of last week's shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Organized by Bridgehampton Fire Department First Assistant Chief Gary Horsburgh with the help of his crew, with goods donated from various volunteers, the memorial is a hard one to miss, with "In Loving Memory of Sandy Hook" signs posted at each end, facing traffic coming east and west on Montauk Highway.

"I just feel so sorry for those little kids," Horsburgh said on Thursday. "I found out today one of them wanted to be a firefighter when he grew up. So I said we need to do something."

Horsburgh said Water Mill Building Supply donated the plywood and paint to do up the signs, while Agway donated the wreaths and K-Mart, the 26 bows that decorate them.

Horsburgh added that he was hoping to do a memorial service at some point, though with Christmas fast approaching, putting something together has been difficult, and may revisit the idea after the holiday.
