Fire Destroys Water Mill Mansion [VIDEO]

Many fire departments respond to blaze Thursday night.

UPDATE 1:20 a.m.: Fire department officials have wrapped their work and left the scene.

UPDATE 12:07 a.m.: An excavator is on scene knocking down the chimney of the destroyed house.

Eight fire departments were called to respond to a fire at a mansion on Jordan Drive in Water Mill on Thursday evening that completely destroyed the home and damaged a neighboring residence before it was extinguished.

A resident of nearby Head of Pond Road reported seeing a red glow, like from a fire, at 6:47 p.m., police said. and firefighters set out to the area of Edge of Woods Road and Deerfield Road, and discovered that a large house at 18 Jordan Drive, off Edge of Woods Road, was nearly fully engulfed in flames.

Southampton Fire Chief Rodney "Chip" Pierson called in Hampton Bays, Riverhead, Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton, East Hampton and Flanders fire departments to assist as well, said.

The estate was listed for $4,675,000 with Gary DePersia of . According to the listing, the house was a 6,800-square-foot 10-bedroom on 1.5 acres.

was on scene for the rehabilitation of firefighters exposed to heat and smoke, and in cause of injury. The ambulance corps called in the , Hampton Bays, Flanders, Bridgehampton, East Hampton Village ambulance companies.

At least one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.

The , Hampton Bays and fire departments sent rapid intervention teams, according to chatter on the fire department radio frequency. Rapid intervention teams standby in case they are needed to rescue other firefighters in distress.

Southampton Town fire marshals are investigating.

UPDATE 10:12 p.m.: The fire is out, but the house is still smoking. Fifteen pizzas were just ordered for the firefighters, who have been on scene since dinnertime.

UPDATE 8:14 p.m.: Additional interior firefighters are being asked to respond. The fire had been knocked down, but firefighters at the scene were conducting an overhaul of the house, looking for "hot spots."

Firefighters can only work for a certain amount of time, as their air tanks will deplete, so back up is necessary.

A "large glow" was reported in the area of Edge of Woods Road and Deerfield Road at about 6:50 p.m. Fire department officials discovered a large house on Jordan Drive, off Edge of Woods Road, was nearly fully engulfed in flames.

According to chatter on the fire department radio frequency, the wind was pushing the fire inside and firefighters were preparing for an exterior attack in rainy weather conditions. There appeared to be some concern for the houses to the north, according to chatter.

The and the were both initially called out because the area boarders the two departments' service areas. Tankers from North Sea, and departments were called to the scene, as well as brush trucks.

was called in around 7:15 p.m. and Flanders Fire Department was called to standby at Southampton Fire Department headquarters.
