Fire Destroys Water Mill Mansion [VIDEO]
Many fire departments respond to blaze Thursday night.
UPDATE 1:20 a.m.: Fire department officials have wrapped their work and left the scene.
UPDATE 12:07 a.m.: An excavator is on scene knocking down the chimney of the destroyed house.
Eight fire departments were called to respond to a fire at a mansion on Jordan Drive in Water Mill on Thursday evening that completely destroyed the home and damaged a neighboring residence before it was extinguished.
A resident of nearby Head of Pond Road reported seeing a red glow, like from a fire, at 6:47 p.m., police said. Southampton and North Sea firefighters set out to the area of Edge of Woods Road and Deerfield Road, and discovered that a large house at 18 Jordan Drive, off Edge of Woods Road, was nearly fully engulfed in flames.
Southampton Fire Chief Rodney "Chip" Pierson called in Hampton Bays, Riverhead, Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton, East Hampton and Flanders fire departments to assist as well, Southampton Town police said.
The estate was listed for $4,675,000 with Gary DePersia of Corcoran Group. According to the listing, the house was a 6,800-square-foot 10-bedroom on 1.5 acres.
Southampton Volunteer Ambulance was on scene for the rehabilitation of firefighters exposed to heat and smoke, and in cause of injury. The ambulance corps called in the Southampton Village, Hampton Bays, Flanders, Bridgehampton, East Hampton Village ambulance companies.
At least one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
The Sag Harbor, Hampton Bays and Amagansett fire departments sent rapid intervention teams, according to chatter on the fire department radio frequency. Rapid intervention teams standby in case they are needed to rescue other firefighters in distress.
Southampton Town fire marshals are investigating.

UPDATE 8:28 p.m.: A firefighter is being treated for smoke inhalation.
UPDATE 8:14 p.m.: Additional interior firefighters are being asked to respond. The fire had been knocked down, but firefighters at the scene were conducting an overhaul of the house, looking for "hot spots."
Firefighters can only work for a certain amount of time, as their air tanks will deplete, so back up is necessary.
A "large glow" was reported in the area of Edge of Woods Road and Deerfield Road at about 6:50 p.m. Fire department officials discovered a large house on Jordan Drive, off Edge of Woods Road, was nearly fully engulfed in flames.
According to chatter on the fire department radio frequency, the wind was pushing the fire inside and firefighters were preparing for an exterior attack in rainy weather conditions. There appeared to be some concern for the houses to the north, according to chatter.
The Southampton Fire Department and the North Sea Fire Department were both initially called out because the area boarders the two departments' service areas. Tankers from North Sea, Hampton Bays and Bridgehampton departments were called to the scene, as well as brush trucks.
The Sag Harbor, Hampton Bays and Amagansett fire departments sent rapid intervention teams. Rapid intervention teams standby in case they are needed to rescue other firefighters in distress.
East Hampton Fire Department was called in around 7:15 p.m. and Flanders Fire Department was called to standby at Southampton Fire Department headquarters.
The Southampton Volunteer Ambulance was called to the scene to standby. The Bridgehampton Fire Department Ambulance Company and Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance were on scene as well according to an inventory of trucks on scene at 8:03 p.m.

My kids and I were heading home on Deerfiked at 7:00. The flames lit up the sky. We raced to see if someone needed help but the fire was HUGE and a fire crew was already there. We just sat in our vehicle in awe of the magnitude of the fire and prayed that nobody would be hurt.

our house looks at the houses on jordan lane. The fire was so close. The kids were screaming and crying and thought we were all going to die. Thank god the wind was blowing away from us and that there is rain in the air. I am so glad everyone is safe!!
We are so thankful no one was in that house. I have never in my life seen a fire like that. May all the firefighters stay safe!!!

Was it caused by lightning or an upside down mortgage. Hope the arson squad was called.

Hey Richard Stauffer, I am offended by your comment. You should try to be a little more sensitive with your uneducated and rude remarks. I know the owners of this home and they are current on their mortgage and are completely devastated by this. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I have never witnessed a fire of that magnitude up close, but just watched the video. I hope all the fire fighters are OK ... can't even imagine arriving to something like that! A big thank you to all the surrounding districts for giving a helping hand and others for standing by. As my husband is a fireman, I pray for their safety all the time.

I agree with Rachel. It doesn't matter how big or how small the home was. It is a tremendous loss for the owner of the home. Imagine if this was your home how you would feel. Thank goodness no one was hurt or killed - that is the most important thing.

I also agree with Rachael, shame on you. I know the owner as well, who happenes to be a wonderful person and is faced with this enormous loss. your remarks are damaging, hurtfull and downright insensitive.

How awful for Richard to say such a disgraceful comment! What a small world you must live in! This was someones home! There were so many people there risking their lives to save it! Thank god no one was hurt! Just truly shameful that a person could even reply that way to this devastation!

Those houses are awfully close together. On the first video, near the end, you can hear the videographer say to someone "it's that party house. You hear it all summer?" I thought group rentals were not permitted. Would be nice if the town would enforce it.
