Dunkerley's: Building for Sale, Business Is Not

Main Street storefront on market for $3.6 million.

Dunkerley's Office Products owner Harold Wilson says it is no secret that the building that houses his business is on the market — but that doesn't mean Dunkerley's itself it for sale.

Wilson, of North Sea, explained that the building, at 137 Main Street, is more spacious than he needs these days, having lost business to large office supply chains and online outlets that can undercut his prices because of volume. "I intend to scale back," he said. He wants to move someplace smaller, but stick in Southampton Village.

"I don't necessarily think I need such a big building, that's what it boils down to," he said.

The building is 4,800 square feet on .37 acres, according to the real estate listing, which puts the asking price at $3,595,000. The building has been on the market for more than a year, Wilson said.

While the office supply end of his business has suffered, Wilson said that he is adding more fine stationery brands to his offerings and the repair and service side is thriving. Dunkerley's services copiers on behalf of huge companies that prefer not to send their own repair technicians to the East End, he said. "They don't want to put a car out on the road."

A few "tire kickers" have come around to inquire about the building, but no one made any offers, Wilson said. He has, however, been approached about selling the business itself. But, at 52, he says he has no intention of doing that any time soon.

Wilson said he is only asking for the fair market value of the building, no more, and is in no big hurry to sell it.
