Dune Road and Meadow Lane Breached

Ocean roads will remain under evacuation orders until at least Monday morning, authorities say.

Authorities say they expect Southampton Town’s ocean roads — Dune Road and Meadow Lane — will remain closed to traffic and under mandatory evacuation orders until at least Monday morning.

On Dune Road in Hampton Bays and East Quogue, the ocean washed over in numerous places, Southampton Town Police Sgt. Scott Foster said Sunday evening. “There is much debris and water and sand in the roadway, and that’s the difficulty.”

Another high tide is expected between 7 and 8 p.m., and more spillover is possible, so the road will not reopen Sunday night, he said.

“They have tried to patch those holes in the dunes,” Foster said, explaining that highway workers have been filling the breaches with debris and hoping it holds. “We have no idea if it’s going to work.”

“It won’t be open until we find out in daylight tomorrow what the condition is,” he added.

Foster said there was also a washover on Dune Road in Bridgehampton.

Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley said the water level on Meadow Lane has subsided and the road may be open by about 11:30 Sunday. “We’re probably going to remove the mandatory evacuation order after high tide tomorrow morning,” he said Sunday evening.

“The water did breach the dunes, went over ever single beach that we have, and flooded out Meadow Lane and parts of Gin Lane and a lot of the properties over there,” Epley said.

Foster said that on Dune Road, , and the fishing fleet in Hampton Bays were unscathed, but water did wash around or under commercial properties.

Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays is closed near . “The Shinnecock Bay washed over that, and there’s construction debris there,” Foster said. On top of that, he said, utility poles fell down. Cleaning it up and reopening may be a lengthy procedure, he said.

Noyac Road is reopened, and Sag Harbor Turnpike will likely reopen Sunday night, Foster said.

in Hampton Bays took a lot of damage, according to Foster.  He said the beach was completely washed away, and water was in the parking lot.

The backfill at the Shinnecock Inlet washed away, and the parking lots filled with water and sand. A lighttower at the jetties was lost, and all the benches were gone.

Westhampton Beach Village Police Chief Ray Dean said portions of Dune Road are without power, and his department is coordinating with other agencies on when to re-open the road and bridges. All municipalities will re-open the bridges at the same time, rather than doing it individually, he said.
