Cops: DWI Suspect Was Wanted for Deportation
Southampton Town police say man pulled over in Bridgehampton Sunday had a warrant against him from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
A Southampton man pulled over in Bridgehampton on New Year's Day and charged with felony driving while intoxicated turned out to be wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on a deportation warrant, according to police.
said 55-year-old Mesias Martinez was arrested at 8:43 a.m. Sunday after he was stopped for speeding on the Sag Harbor Turnpike. The DWI charge was elevated to a felony because of a DWI conviction Martinez had within 10 years, police explained. He was also charged with a misdemeanor and a felony count of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
In addition to a warrant from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Martinez had a warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear in , police said. He was held for local arraignment before being turned over to ICE officials.
