UPDATE: No Beaches Ordered Closed

County says beaches listed as "closed" just haven't opened for the season yet.

CORRECTION: Despite early confirmation from Suffolk County that high bacteria levels resulted in beaches being closed in Southampton Town and Sag Harbor, county officials now state that beaches listed on the county website simply haven't opened for the season yet.

ORIGINAL:

Due to elevated bacteria levels after rainfall, two private beaches have been ordered closed in eastern Southampton Town, and Havens Beach in Sag Harbor Village is also closed.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services Beach Monitoring Program is prohibiting bathers from entering the water at the Bathing Corporation of Southampton and The Bridgehampton Club.

According to the county, beaches are closed when water quality is poor and/or other conditions pose a risk to public health.

The beaches will remain closed until two tidal cycles pass after the last rainfall.
